I was out again at the crack of dawn for the last part of the saltwater fly fishing competition in which I’m delighted to have won “The Field Cup” for the biggest fly caught bass of 44cm which I landed the evening before. St Mawes was damp and misty and I was on the rocks in the dark with just the lighthouse and bobbing bouys to keep me company. I managed a small school bass after an hour of fishing but when the tide slackened off and the dreaded sun came out the fishing dropped off for me.

After the presentation for prizes where I received the trophy, a shiny new rod from Orvis and a fine bottle of Kilchoman whiskey, I headed back down to the coast to try and get a few more bass before heading back to the hotel. Alas, the sun was out and apart from one pull and seeing a good bass hit a bait fish on the surface the only catches I witnessed were from the cormorants.  I’ve had a great festival and seen some quality angling from my fellow competitors and enjoyed  listening to some good fishing tales in the bar.  Looking forward to next year already!
