On the river, through January the large dark olive will still be hatching sporadically providing some dry fly action. The ever-present shrimp and louse will also be available near the stream bed. Apart from sporadic rises on milder days, much of your fishing will be concentrated around the stream bed. A hard frost overnight can mean the Grayling will shoal in the pools, allowing for some cracking fishing!

My key tip is to make sure you are fishing deep enough. If you aren’t occasionally touching the bottom you need to use heavier flies or even add a split shot or tungsten putty to your leader.
