2017 Field Cup Winner

Well I’m delighted to announce that I have won the Field Magazine Cup for the biggest fly caught sea bass at the UK Saltwater Fly Fishing Festival Competition in St Mawes, Cornwall. The bass which measured 44cm on the competition scale was taken after 9 hours of solid fishing when I targeting the flooding tide as it filled rocky gullies on the St Mawes coast. In a frantic half hour of activity I landed three Bass had several pulls and lost a number of other fish!

UK Saltwater Fly Fishing Festival Day 2

After a bad nights sleep and an early start I was distinctly bleary when I rolled up to the mark I had chosen to fish the first day of the saltwater fly competition. My plan was to hit the marks where I caught all the pollack yesterday and things started of well just as dawn was breaking with a pollack and mackerel hitting my bootlace sand-eel fly within the first half an hour. Saltwater fly fishing is, however no different to any other type of fishing in that bright warm still sunny days are nearly always bad news!

As the sun rose over the hill it became clear things would not be as good as yesterday. The rays of light were penetrating the deep clear water at St Mawes and I reckon I could see to a depth of 30 or 40 feet in the crystal clear water. I slogged it out as best as I could be it became clear a change of plan was needed.

I decided to go back to the hotel for a cup of tea and a sandwich and take a break while the tide turned, then I would have crack at the bass on the incoming tide, the clouds came in a bit and it looked perfect as water ripped through the rocks and gulleys. I had nothing for the first hour but then suddenly started getting lots of hits. I landed three ,lost two and had several takes all in the last half an hour of fishing including a nice fish of 44cm. Lovely end to the day.

UK Saltwater Fly Fishing Festival Day 1

As the sun was rising over St Mawes, Cornwall, most of the other festival goers were shaking off whiskey tasting hangovers but I was out on the rocks trying for some bass having been sensible enough to bow out early the night before. Alas, the bass didn’t oblige but after a quick breakfast at the hotel I headed over to a different mark to try for some pollack. Most of the outdoor festival events had to be moved indoors due to the high winds but I wasn’t in the mood for listening to presentations – I’m here to fish!

The weather was truly horrific for fly fishing today with 30pmh winds and rain meaning casting was tricky to say the least. Luckily I brought my 10 weight rod in case we had some heavy winds.

Casting a heavy rod and thick shooting head line for tiny kelp dwelling Pollack isn’t ideal but at least I had a pull on my string, catching plenty of small Pollack and loosing a couple of bigger ones too.

I will be out again tomorrow for day one of the salt water fly fishing competition although it’s more of a social event rather than a serious competition.
