If you’ve ever wanted to have fly fishing lessons or take your skills further, Ladybower Reservoir is the perfect place to begin your journey. Surrounded by heather-topped moors, with buzzards and kestrels wheeling overhead, Ladybower offers a setting as inspiring as it is practical. Add in its thriving rainbow trout population and excellent fly life, and you have one of the finest outdoor classrooms in the country.

Fly Fishing Lessons for Beginners and Intermediates

We offer two levels of tuition:

  • Beginners – Perfect if you’ve never picked up a fly rod before. We’ll cover casting basics, tackle setup, fly choice, and fish handling.
  • Intermediate – Designed for anglers with some experience who want to improve distance, presentation, and fish-catching skills.

Whichever level you choose, our emphasis is always the same: a fun, hands-on day with plenty of fishing time, while ensuring you’re learning and progressing a little more with every cast.

A Rich Natural Classroom

Ladybower is alive with insect life throughout the season. Each period of the year offers something new to target:

  • Spring – Trout often respond well to attractor patterns alongside the first buzzer hatches of the season.
  • Early summer – Expect a classic mayfly hatch in June, bringing some of the most exciting dry fly sport of the year.
  • SummerBuzzers and terrestrials such as beetles, ants, and crane flies provide steady daytime sport, while evening caddis hatches can keep the action going until dusk.
  • Cooler months – Don’t discount autumn and winter; the fishing can be excellent, with trout feeding hard as water temperatures drop.

Fish here are often found surprisingly close to the bank, meaning even beginners stand an excellent chance of success during their lesson. Find out more about fly fishing at Ladybower here.
