Best Flies For October: Grayling On Rivers, Rainbows On Reservoirs
Cooler water, higher flows, autumn mists, and the switch to grayling and stillwater rainbows. As the leaves turn copper and gold and thin mists hang over the water at first light, October brings cooler days and higher, more oxygenated flows. On many UK rivers the brown trout season is all but over, so attention naturally pivots to grayling. On stillwaters and reservoirs, falling surface temperatures wake up the rainbow trout, with fish pushing back into the margins and top layers.
