Spring on the River: A Fly Fisher’s Heaven

7:38 am

The scent of wild garlic drifts on the breeze. Leaves are beginning to unfurl, and soft green light filters through to the water. Hawthorn flies are blown on the water. Black gnats gather near shaded runs. Spring is here—and the rivers are alive.

This is the season of subtle signs. You watch as a Large Dark Olive bathes on the surface, drifting calmly across a pool. Then, suddenly—gone. Gulped down by a trout you hadn’t even seen. Moments like that stay with you.

Black gnats bring sippers under the trees, and the mayflies—though not quite here yet—are coming soon. Deeper down, there’s hidden silver, lurking in the pool—the first sea trout slipping into freshwater. And with the next big lift in water, salmon will punch their way upstream, fresh from the sea.

This is the time to be ready.

Whether you’re stalking wild trout or preparing for salmon and sea trout, we’re here to help. We carry the flies, the gear, the knowledge, and the time to talk things through. Whether you’re seasoned or starting out, help and advice are always free.
