Fly Fishing is one of those hobbies where you can spend a lot of money. Rods can cost anything from £20 to £2000. Most of us have a limit to how much we can spend on fly fishing each year and the cost of flies, tackle and day tickets soon add up. So where do you spend your hard earned cash to get the most value?

My advice would be to invest a healthy majority of your budget on somewhere appealing to fish. Agreed, it’s lovely to cast on an expensive rod but the benefits you get for all that extra cash are quite small – a rod that costs £300 is not 10 times better than a rod that costs £30.

Yes, some of these prime locations will cost a fortune but they tend to be the famous bits of river and chalk stream and if you look further a field to rivers and streams that are not so famous there are some real bargains to be had.

There are even some rivers, lochs and lakes that you can fish for free! Some of the passport schemes that operate around the country have opened up some beautiful spots for a minimal fee.

I will make no bones about it, fly fishing can be expensive when compared to coarse fishing or sea fishing but you will be buying these memories for a lifetime.

So, I would put a healthy majority of my fishing budget in to joining a club that has some pleasant fishing or purchasing day tickets for a few attractive bits of water each year. You needn’t spend a fortune and good clubs are available in some areas of the country for less than a hundred pounds a year, although the further south in the country you are you generally find you pay more for your fishing.
