A Derbyshire Grayling from a fly fishing lesson

It’s been a mild few weeks out on the water. On the river, the surface activity has dropped off in line with the fewer hatching flies expected at this time of year. During our fly fishing lessons in the Peak District there have been sporadic hatches of large dark olives but most fish have been feeding down near the stream bed.

Czech nymphs or heavy tungsten nymphs have proved most successful with caddis or shrimp patterns gaining the best results!

On the local still waters, the rainbows have been taking plenty of midges which seem to still be hatching in good numbers. During fly fishing lessons we have also taken a few fish on fry imitations where we have observed trout hitting larger fry near the shallows. Watch our for marauding pike though!
