Klinkhammer Fishing Fly
Klinkhammer Fishing Fly

The Klinkhammer Fishing Fly is a truly brilliant fishing fly. Originally tied by Hans Van Klinken to try and imitate the emerging caddis fly. The original klinkhammer was a light tan version, these days Klinkhammer fishing flies are available in a huge range of different colours.

An emerger is designed so that some of the flies body will sit beneath the water and some above. In the case of the Klinkhammer, the curved hook allows a bit of the body and the point of the hook to be under the water whilst the wing post of the fly sits high above.

Klinkhammers are great flies for fishing the faster runs and riffles for waiting trout and grayling and are buoyant enough to withstand turbulent water. Klinkhammers are tied on a curved hook and are designed to imitate the emerging caddis pupa after it has ascended and hatches into an adult fly. Klinkhammers are also widely used on still waters where hungry trout will feed avidly on emerging caddis fly.

Lifecycle of the caddis fly

The caddis fly is one of the most prolific flies found in rivers and streams and most species follow a similar lifecycle to the one pictured above. The Klinkhammer fishing fly is an essential addition to any fly anglers box!
